A New Skill
Yesterday, I was preparing to cut my husband’s and son’s hair, in the kitchen. I had my scissors, electric trimmer and combs all ready and was sitting in my power chair, waiting for them to get ready.
I realized I should take my socks off before cutting hair, so clippings didn’t get on my socks and I wouldn’t track them all through the house on the way to the shower.
I couldn’t lean down and reach my socks, so I rubbed the heel of one foot against my foot rest on the chair and the sock rolled off my heel and completely fell off.
Kodi was right there and when I asked him to pick it up he did and handed it to me. I rubbed the other heel against the foot rest and lifted my foot, wiggling my toes and asked him to ‘tug sock’. He carefully put his teeth on the toe of the sock, not touching my toes, and pulled the sock off, then handed it to me.
He got a special treat and lots of praise and love.
He waited while I cut hair, under the kitchen table, next to my power chair. When I finished cutting hair and my husband was sweeping the floor he came to the side of my chair, leaned against me and I stroked him, giving him love.
He followed me into the bathroom and stayed outside the shower stall while I showered. When I was finished, he went in and got on the bed. I sat on the edge of the bed to get dressed and he came up behind me, put his chin on my shoulder and licked my ear, neck and cheek, trying to reach my mouth and nose.
Later, when I was getting ready to go to bed, I decided to see if Kodi taking off my sock was just a fluke or something we could build on. I asked him to get down off the bed, as he always gets on the bed before me and makes it hard for me to get into bed, while he’s laying on the covers.
He sat down in front of me and I rubbed both feet against the floor, pulling my socks down off my heals. I asked him to ‘tug sock’ and offered him a treat. He took my sock off, gently and handed it to me. I asked him for the ‘other one’. He took it off, gently and handed it to me.
I gave him a reward and asked him to ‘wait’. He let me put my feet in bed and lay down, before I told him to ‘come up’ and he jumped into bed, coming up between my husband and I, licking my face over and over, before laying down and going to sleep.
He simply amazes me!
